Post-election Violence And 4 Other Things That Happened In 92 While Joho Was Sitting For His Exam
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has denied claims that he forged a KCSE certificate to get admission to the University of Nairobi.Joho sat his KCSE in 1993 and scored a C+, and later undertook bridging courses before enrolling for a degree at UoN.While some sources still insist that the governor did his exam in 1992 and that his certificate is fake, the High Court sitting in Mombasa has temporarily barred police from probing, summoning, arresting or prosecuting him.Other than his controversial exam, 92 was a rather wild year for Kenya. Here are a few examples that prove that.
- Former President of the Republic Daniel arap Moi dissolved the National Assembly on 28 October 1992 (five months before the expiry of its term) in preparation for the first multiparty elections in 26 years. Other political parties apart from the formerly dominant Kenya African National Union (KANU) had been authorized in December 1991. The polling was held simultaneously with presidential and local government elections.
- Moi won a second term after the elections
- The early part of 1992 saw approximately 2,000 people killed in tribal conflict in the west of the country. The wave of inter-ethnic conflicts in the Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western and some parts of the Coastal provinces went down in Kenya’s history as one of the worst tribal clashes seen.
- In 1992, the late Angela Chibalonza decided to leave the DRC for Kenya. Chibalonza denied that she left her homeland because of on-going violence, there. Instead, she said her decision to relocate in Nairobi was a career-move.
