President Donald Trump questioned the politics of his decision to finally acknowledge former President Barack Obama was born in the US, which he did late during the campaign in 2016, according to a source close to the White House. In recent months, [advisers] say, Trump has used closed-door conversations to question the authenticity of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. He has also repeatedly claimed that he lost the popular vote last year because of widespread voter fraud, according to advisers and lawmakers.Trump is also claiming that the Access Hollywood tape featuring him bragging about sexually assaulting women — which he publicly admitted was real and apologized for — is fake, three people close to him told the Times. Before declaring his candidacy, Mr Trump actively embraced the discredited notion that Mr Obama, his predecessor and a Democrat, was not born in the United States and was thus ineligible to be president.Late in the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr Trump renounced the birther movement, saying “President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period”. The reversal came a day after Mr Trump had refused to acknowledge Mr Obama’s American birth to the Washington Post, responding to a question about his views by saying “I just don’t want to answer it yet”.
