Uhuru wins democracy prize, Magufuli takes home Peace Prize at Mandela Peace awards
After some 4,956 people submitted their applications to be considered for the Mandela Peace Prize, none other than President John Pombe Magufuli of Tanzania emerged the winner.President Magufuli, nicknamed the "the Bulldozer", was feted as the winner of the Mandela Peace Prize 2017, beating Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta and several other leaders.Uhuru Kenyatta was accorded the democracy prize for demonstrating a true spirit of democracy when he accepted the Supreme Court to annul his August 8 victory.Also the Supreme Court in Kenya and Zimbabwean Army have been awarded a Nelson Mandela Boldness Prize for making a deliberate decision to the interests of their nations.President of the Mandela Institute, Dr Paul Kananura, said President Kenyatta has been awarded for demonstrating true democracy by accepting the Supreme Court's decision to respect the principle of separation of the authorities.The Kenyan Supreme Court nullified the results of presidential election in August 8, 2017, which awarded Kenyatta victory and ordered the re-election to take part of which he participated and emerged the winner."This shows that President Kenyatta has contributed to the strengthening of Kenya's democracy," said Dr Kananura.President of Chad, Idriss Itno has won the Mandela Security Prize for the anti-terrorism policy in the Sahel and Lake Chad areas.Another winner is Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza was awarded the Mandela Courage Prize.MI is a South Africa based institute and an international Think Tank that aims to promote equity, open economy, international help and African unity.Its leaders want to preserve thought and inspiration of President Nelson Mandela and to promote the values of open society and peace all over Africa.
