Anger as Kenyans spot subsidized Unga being sold in Canada for KSh 1400 (Photos)

Government subsidized unga going for Sh 90 is now in Canada. It is bad enough that one can not get their hands on a packet of unga in the country, it is now in a foreign country. The government, in a bid to cushion Kenyans from the adversities of Maize flour (or lack of), decided to import flour from Mexico at a subsdised price of KSh 90 per packet back in May.The shocker however is that one packet is going for a whooping $14 equivalent to Sh 1400 in Canada. The maize also has the GoK sticker. It also seems like Canadian buyers have also been limited to two packets each. The store, known as “Chakula Tamu” is presumably Kenyan-owned, and is stocking Maize flour, among other things. The government unveiled a 6 billion shilling ($58.14 million) maize subsidy program a few months ago to lower the unit cost of flour to 90 shillings, after it soared by a third to around 136 shillings during a regional drought.Richard Lesiyampe, principal secretary at the ministry of agriculture, blamed panic buying for the shortages, which he said were not widespread. He said Kenya has 43,000 metric tonnes of maize and a ship carrying another 43,000 tonnes of Mexican corn is expected on Thursday. Further shipments are expected at the port of Mombasa on June 11 and 15.
