Breaking: At Least 1 Dead, 19 Hurt After Car Slams Into Crowd in Times Square

Police have detained and arrested a man after his speeding vehicle jumped the curb and hit pedestrians on the sidewalk at Times Square. The driver, a 26-year-old man from the Bronx with a history of DWI arrests and license suspensions, was taken into custody after barreling into the lunch-hour crowd near 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue shortly before noon, sources said. Sources said he made a wrong turn on Seventh Avenue and started careening down the sidewalk in the opposite direction, which is why so many were hurt.Fire officials say a total of 19 people were injured, but it's not clear if all those victims had been hit by the vehicle. Four of those people were taken to hospitals in critical or serious condition. Sources say the number of victims is expected to rise as law enforcement agencies coordinate their rescue efforts.A witness told ABC station WABC that the driver got out of the car after the crash and ran across the street. The driver was then tackled by police officers, the witness said. The witness told WABC the scene was total "chaos" and "everybody was trying to help."
