Kenyan Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Rape In Illinois Faces 16 Years In Jail If Convicted

A Kenyan man in Illinois has been arrested for suspicion of raping a woman in a hotel room.According to Greensburg Daily News, police were called to the Baymont Inn shortly before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after a report of a sex offense. Law enforcement officials subsequently arrested Teddy M. Muriithi, 38, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois on a preliminary charge of rape.An oral probable cause hearing took place in Decatur County Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon, after which Muriithi was formally charged with rape, a Level 3 felony, according to court records.A Level 3 felony carries a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison in the event of a conviction.Muriithi is alleged to have performed or submitted to a sex act on a young woman while she was “unaware that the sexual intercourse or other sexual conduct is occurring,” according to court documents.Due to the probable cause hearing, other details about the case were not immediately available.No bond has been set in the case and Muriithi had yet to make his initial court appearance at press time Wednesday. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
