Pregnant Woman Charged With Attempt To Overthrow President Paul Kagame

A pregnant British mother of two has been charged by a court in Rwanda Kigali, with attempting to overthrow the government of President Paul Kagame.Violette Uwamahoro a Rwandan-British youth worker, pleaded not guilty after she was charged with spreading state secrets to undermine President Kagame.Uwamahoro is the wife of political opposition activist Faustin Rukundo.Prosecutors also claimed that Uwamahoro was trying to form an armed group when she entered the country. She’s five months pregnant with her third child and was arrested on Valentine's Day after travelling to Rwanda for a family funeral.“I can tell you the outcome of this trial even before it gets going," Faustin Rukundo, Uwamahoro's husband, told the BBC adding that she hasn’t spoken to her wife since she was arrested almost five weeks ago."Finding her guilty is a foregone conclusion, especially as Rwanda's justice system is not independent, with any lawyer doing properly his job risking being disbarred."Rukundo said that they are hoping the British government will intervene after asking them for assistance.A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are providing assistance to a British woman and her family following her arrest in Rwanda. Our staff in Kigali are in touch with local authorities."Uwamahoro denied all charges.Rukundo is an activist in the opposition group Rwanda National Congress and living in exile. The couple live in Leeds and have been in the UK for a number of years. Rukundo was given nationality in 2014.
