Why Jubilee has rejected Wafula Chebukati's new IEBC team
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party has rejected the new project team named by electoral commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati to conduct next month’s fresh presidential election throwing the poll planning into further disarray. In a statement to newsrooms, Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju saaid the team contains names of individuals Jubilee Party considers partisan in the political scene.
On Wednesday, it emerged that some members of the commission were unhappy with the manner in which their chairman, Chebukati, went about naming the seven-member team under his supervision to manage the repeat poll.
The commissioners were reported to have complained that they did not know about the appointments and saw the announcement on the news late Tuesday.Chebukati said neither President Uhuru Kenyatta nor NASA leader Raila Odinga has the power to dictate how the IEBC operates. Both the leaders through their handlers have made various demands to the commission ahead of the grand rematch between them. The IEBC officials that NASA wants fired include the chief executive officer Ezra Chiloba, director of voter registration Immaculate Kassait, Commissioner in charge of ICT Prof Abdi Yakub Guliye, head of legal affairs Praxidis Tororey, deputy CEO in charge of operations Betty Nyabuto and ICT director James Muhati.
